We live in a culture that bombards us with advertising images insisting that we must correct our flaws. We’re part of a society that pressures us to believe that a certain body weight or size is the only acceptable weight or size. We can’t all be skinny. Each of us has a different body, a different body type, and different metabolisms. Most people who aren’t skinny are actually healthy the size they are.

I’ll leave you with this: In a day and age when we seem to all be on board to “self-improve” ourselves, I propose that one of the best ways to actually do that is to begin listening more to our (inner) self. Eat when you’re hungry. Stop when you’re full

4. How Long to Form a Habit?

Phillippa Lally and colleagues from University College London recruited 96 people who were interested in forming a new habit such as eating a piece of fruit with lunch or doing a 15 minute run each day Lally et al. (2009). On average a plateau in automaticity was reached after 66 days. In other words it had become as much of a habit as it was ever going to become.

Hi Alexis,

You are absolutely right. The desire to look a certain way or follow a certain plan handed down by someone else implies that we need to be fixed, that we do not know ourselves and it leaves us with a lack of trust in our own instincts and bodies.
I am happy to hear that you are lessening the control over food and beginning to really experience life.

Dieting also keeps you focused on the fact you need to be fixed. The % of your fixing depending on your emotional baggage. It effects me 100%. My entire life is controlled by how well or how badly I control food. If that area is off, my entire life is off. Every part of my life will be abandoned until I get food under control. I’d even withhold vitamins until I have a handle on my appetite — and really any other kind of self-care. The good thing is for the past several months the ratio has reversed. Now, the less control I have over food, the more life I have.
I know a lot of ppl who aren’t effected as badly, they can still function. But, no one I know who has to lose weight sees it only as that. I don’t know anyone who can divorce their weight from their self-esteem.

When you are dieting it all becomes about what you cannot eat, which automatically creates craving and a desire to binge and overeat. Taking the focus off diets, weight loss and constant obsession about what to eat frees your mind and allows you to intuitively decide what to eat.

Is that why when I diet all I think about is food?
